Month Challenge

Most of our Bike to Work Day riders also participated in our Bike Month Challenge. There were two competitions, one for most rides and one for most miles logged as verified by Strava. (Check out our Diablo Club). The winners received one of the two bike themed posters donated by myself.

Nick crushed the number of rides challenge at 40 rides for the month and Julio blew past 200 miles to hit 210 on the last day. Congrats gents!

How Far did you ride today?
5.4 miles

Do you commute regularly?
I work from home so technically no. But I try and get on my bike daily.

Hardest thing about bike commuting?
The hardest thing for me is finding new areas around me to explore, I have a pretty set routine. And with an army of little Thompson’s time is also hard to come by.

Have a funny bike story?
My rides are pretty bland but if there is a funny story it happened this morning…whilst riding a pterodactyl sized bug hit me in the neck and went down my shirt. Screaming franticly I grabbed it and threw it as far away from me as I could. I imagine any bystanders got a pretty good laugh at that. I hate bugs.

What’s the best part of Bike Month?
The little competition we have going within the office, its been fun and its not even over yet!

Have a funny bike story?
Last year’s weather during Bike to Work Day was so bad going home. I made it about 5 miles from work and ended up making my way to a friend’s beauty bar that is close to the bike trail. I was able to use their towels and hair dryer to dry off as best I could. Then I sat there for almost an hour drinking coffee with Bailey’s until my husband came and picked me up.

We get a cool t-shirt at work.

Have a funny bike story?
Once, when I was 6, I was riding my bike down the street shaking my head from side to side. I have no idea why, but I must have thought it was fun. Apparently I was not riding in a straight line, and rode smack dab into a wooden mailbox, the side of my face taking most of the impact of the crash. My face was scraped, bruised and bleeding. My bike was no longer rideable. But, my ego hurt the most when I realized that the owner of the mailbox saw the entire thing.

He wasn’t just anyone, he was Borough Council President, which is pretty much celebrity status to a 6 year old from a very small town. He walked up to me as I was laying on the ground and said “Do you know tampering with mailboxes is a federal offense?” And then he smiled, helped me up, and took me inside for some lemonade. I was about a mile away from my house, which was too far to walk with a broken bike, so I got to hang out with Mr. President until my mom came and picked me up. Despite me ruining his mailbox, we became instant buddies and developed a lifetime bond.

And yes, back then, it was totally acceptable for a 6 year old to be riding her bike alone a mile away from home! And, it wasn’t weird at all that I went into someone’s house that I didn’t really know and hung out with him until my mom got there. Crazy how different the times are now!

What’s the best part of Bike Month?
Hearing people say that commuting via bikes is easier than they thought!

How Far did you ride today?
1.5 Miles

Do you commute regularly?
Yes

Hardest thing about bike commuting?
Bike commuting is hard, especially with road closures, construction, the shower situation, mosquito swarms, the many smells of the Platte, carrying all that work stuff, and always hoping it doesn’t hail on the way back. But, the hardest thing is definitely the dodging of cars, sometimes you just don’t win.

Have a funny bike story?
I was cussed at by a homeless person once, well they do that often, but here’s one – I was on a bike ride waiting at an intersection, a train was coming, and this old man was making his way across the tracks, he was coming from the other side, he had a shopping cart with his belongings, he was stumbling, so probably drunk, and he kept getting his cart stuck on the tracks, so it was up in the air whether he would make it across the tracks before the train arrived. I dropped my bike and ran to go help him, grabbed his cart and took it off the tracks, he didn’t like that. So, the train missed us by a bit and I still had to wait for it to go all the way through before I could cross, I got yelled at the whole time I waited. He slurred a lot, so I couldn’t quite understand everything he said, but there were a few F bombs among other things.

What’s the best part of Bike Month?
Best part about Bike Month is my birthday, it lands one the same month. Once I start hearing talk about Bike Month, I know my birthday is near.

How Far did you ride today?
9.3 miles each way

Do you commute regularly?
I try—this year it’s been 2-3 times a week

Hardest thing about bike commuting?
Dealing with weather and errands

Have a funny bike story?
My first road bike (the same one I rode in today) was a Craigslist find by a buddy that knew what to look for. He was able to get me a fantastic deal, so I rolled with it being purple (not my first choice). When I went to pick it up from my buddy’s house, he and some other acquaintances had decked it out rather fantastically: Purple handlebar streamers, purple Disney princess helmet, cute basket on front and more. So nice of them.

What’s the best part of Bike Month?
I’m a bike advocate and it’s great to see all the awareness it creates.

5.2 miles, I took a look around town to get in the spirit!

Do you commute regularly?
Yes, few times a week.

Hardest thing about bike commuting?
I find the whole 0.6 miles from my house quite daunting. Oh and it also dictates your outfit for the day which can be annoying.

Have a funny bike story?
This morning was great we had a lot of fun riding to the different breakfast stations. But the best part was when Angela got called a “Dummy” by a passing commuter on the bike path for being on the wrong side of the road. Classic.

What’s the best part of Bike Month?
The competition to ride the most into the office. Gotta love anything you can turn into a contest!

Hardest thing about bike commuting?
Riding next to parked cars who could open door, yet being cautious of cars passing

Have a funny bike story?
I had everything ready to go the night before. In the morning my tires were flat, however I had an air compressor in the garage. I pulled it out, got it setup, only to find out the compressor didn’t work anymore….so I had to hand pump both tires unexpectedly.

The excitement generated from it within the company.
